She has been attending Better Parenting Plus workshops. She said that it has helped her in terms of how she communicates with her children. She used to shout at them, comparing them and she was short tempered. But through the training she has changed how she is raising her children, she said that she learned about different parenting skills such as being calm and firm, strict parenting etc. She learned the difference between discipline and punishment and understanding that our children have different personalities/temperament. The training has helped her to understand her children better and she is now treating them appropriately. She even brought her neighbour to learn better parenting and she recommended that this kind of workshops must be continuous so that parents in Diepsloot must learn to treat their children well and change their behaviours. An example are the campaigns that we will be running for 16 Days of Activism Against GBVF and Mental Health Month which can only occur in November and October respectively. The children are still busy with their sessions, but these are 85% complete which is a strong win given how little time we have in the schools due to exams and the school holidays as well as the late start of the project. This was a result of the late signing of the contract and we did what we could to alleviate these concerns. We also focused on getting the information on the learners in place and preparing for the start of the programme while we waited for the go ahead to start. \n\nWe had some challenges with parents who RSVP for our Better Parenting Sessions and then didn\u0027t arrive or arrived very late to the sessions due to other competing priorities such as temporary work or sick children. We urged the importance of consistent attendance, but also are aware of the many challenges that they face in attending and appreciate when we can access them. \n\nAs a result of the late start, we could not conduct the baseline assessment as we usually would as this would mean that we could not finish the sessions with the children as planned. A alternative qualitative assessment will be conducted which will still be able to see the impact of the work. \n\nDue to getting new employment, we were left with only five facilitators from the group of 20 and they have had to conduct the majority of the sessions with children with the assistance of three REPSSI staff members also assisting them with facilitation of sessions. The challenge that their children mentioned mostly was about their bodies being shamed by other peers or boys who are proposing to them. One parent indicated that her child has changes even in terms of eating, she is no longer eating too much because her peers always tells her that she is short and fat. The facilitator asked how the parents are supporting their children in addressing the challenges that they are facing in terms of accepting their bodies and changes that is happening in their bodies. They spoke about good communication and good approach when talking to their children that they sit them down and tell them that they must accept because it is happening to every girl and boys furthermore is part of them growing. They also mentioned that they support them through buying them pads, painkillers for those who have period pains, they also buy those sanitary towels. On the issue of children who unable to accept their bodies they have told them that they should accept things that they cannot change and accept who they are for example for the child that said her peers teases her that she is short and fat. The facilitator mentioned that REPSSI has a programme called Empowering Girls and Peace is a Decision where children are taught in schools so that girls and they will be able to accept their bodies and changes that are happening to them and be able to take precautions to protect themselves or to stay away from sexual activities that will lead them to teenage pregnancy. The ones that are still in completion are process activities and are thus ongoing, such as the mentorship and coaching, Kids Clubs and engagement of key stakeholders. An example are the campaigns that we will be running for 16 Days of Activism Against GBVF and Mental Health Month which can only occur in November and October respectively. As a result, based on the feedback that we received from the parents/caregivers, we engaged with healthcare workers and trained them on how to make their Healthcare centre safe and trauma informed for young people and those affected by GBV. In addition, we took their other recommendation and engaged with the community leadership to become advocates for women and children around protecting them from GBV. The community leaders have agreed to be trained by REPSSI in November, which is a start to their buy-in and onboarding as GBV Prevention Advocates. The parents/caregivers have also decided to create a support group to help each other learn more about children and their protection. This came as a result of our Making our Community Safer Programme as well as the Better Parenting Plus Programme. We have compiled a report on the impact of the partnership between 1st for Women and REPSSI from 2019 to 2023 which we will be disseminating widely. We were able to conduct a community mapping of Diepsloot which assisted us in knowing what resources existed within the community in a much better manner than previously. 9/29/2024 5:32:48 PM - Message: ResponseValue to add :- questionText:Please provide a success story or case study from this reporting period, Value:Mpumi (pseudonym), female aged 36. She has been attending Better Parenting Plus workshops. She said that it has helped her in terms of how she communicates with her children. She used to shout at them, comparing them and she was short tempered. But through the training she has changed how she is raising her children, she said that she learned about different parenting skills such as being calm and firm, strict parenting etc. She learned the difference between discipline and punishment and understanding that our children have different personalities/temperament. The training has helped her to understand her children better and she is now treating them appropriately. She even brought her neighbour to learn better parenting and she recommended that this kind of workshops must be continuous so that parents in Diepsloot must learn to treat their children well and change their behaviours. 9/29/2024 5:32:48 PM - Message: ResponseValue to add :- questionText:What were some of the key significant challenges faced during this reporting period for this project (besides funding)?, Value:The school principals kept calling asking when we would start in the schools and they were very anxious that we would not be implementing the programmes in the schools as they found that it helped immensely with behavioural challenges displayed by learners. This was a result of the late signing of the contract and we did what we could to alleviate these concerns. We also focused on getting the information on the learners in place and preparing for the start of the programme while we waited for the go ahead to start. We had some challenges with parents who RSVP for our Better Parenting Sessions and then didn't arrive or arrived very late to the sessions due to other competing priorities such as temporary work or sick children. We urged the importance of consistent attendance, but also are aware of the many challenges that they face in attending and appreciate when we can access them. As a result of the late start, we could not conduct the baseline assessment as we usually would as this would mean that we could not finish the sessions with the children as planned. A alternative qualitative assessment will be conducted which will still be able to see the impact of the work. By pooling our resources and expertise, we have been able to run campaigns that have been meaningful and impactful to the community. An example is the walk that was conducted to combat child neglect within Diepsloot.
